Most people consider fire protection as a question of smoke detectors and sprinkler systems. But what do you do when those systems fail—usually temporarily, but sometimes unexpectedly? That’s when Fire Watch services are a necessity—not just for safety, but for compliance with Ontario law.

At GuardsOn Canada Security, we are experts at delivering Fire Watch services across Ontario. We’ve witnessed how Fire Watch averts crises—and keeps property owners in good standing with fire code requirements.

What Is Fire Watch?

Fire Watch is a specific type of service that encompasses trained security officers monitoring a property around the clock for indications of fire dangers when normal fire protective mechanisms—such as sprinklers or alarms—are out of commission. The guards walk the grounds, record safety inspections, recognize fire dangers, and stand prepared to call emergency services at the first hint of trouble.

When Is Fire Watch Legally Mandatory in Ontario?

As per Ontario Fire Code regulations, Fire Watch is required in cases like:

• Malfunction in fire alarm or sprinkler systems
• Planned maintenance or shut down of fire systems
• Damage inspection after fire incidents
• High-risk activities such as welding or hot works
• During construction or demolition activities

Orders to maintain Fire Watch can be issued by local fire authorities under certain conditions for the safety of the public.

When Is It Required? (Real-Life Scenarios)

• System Failure in a Hamilton Hospital

Early this year, a Hamilton hospital suffered a sudden malfunction of its fire alarm system through a power surge. With patients and employees in danger, the facilities team in the hospital called GuardsOn Canada Security in a matter of minutes. Before long, our Fire Watch-trained staff was already on location, offering 24/7 coverage for three days until the system was completely restored—compliant and, above all, safe for patients.

• Vaughan construction

During a major commercial construction project in Vaughan, the building’s fire suppression systems had not yet been installed by the general contractor. As mandated by municipal inspectors, GuardsOn assigned certified Fire Watch officers to patrol the site at all work hours. This was not only compliance with legal requirements but also avoided possible delays in project schedules.

• Welding Work at a Brampton Manufacturing Facility

One of the manufacturers conducting regular welding at their Brampton plant called on us to oversee Fire Watch in hot work operations. Our officer stayed on the premises during and after welding to watch for any remaining heat or ignition sources. That kind of caution isn’t only prudent—it’s fire code-mandated and insurance company-recommended too.

Neglect of Fire Watch Can Be Expensive

A lack of Fire Watch where it should be conducted can result in:

• Fines from local fire departments
• Insurance coverage voided
• Legal liability in case of fire
• Forced evacuation or building closures

That’s why we always recommend clients: don’t wait until there’s a problem to plan for Fire Watch.

Fire Watch is not optional—it’s required when fire systems are not available regardless of whether you own a multi-unit apartment, a commercial building, or an industrial complex. Disregarding this requirement can lead to hefty fines, insurance issues, and most critically, avoidable risk to life.
